Back in 1999 the Southsiders were born. This was back before new ownership gave the club the old "Whitecaps" nickname that used to belong to the old NASL team, back when the nickname was 86ers. Hardcore supporters were fed up with having little children running around them while trying to watch the game, and wanted to watch the game in a proper atmosphere. Hardcore fans started congregating towards the south end of the field where the field was roped off from the track. That way one was able to watch the game without having to deal with the soccer moms and their snot nosed kids who run around the stadium with no intention of watching the game. Eventually the club wised up, removed the rope seperating the south end and the track and allowed fans to watch games from the south end of the stadium. They added a beer tent and things grew.

The Southsiders were first known as the Carlsberg crew, as that was the beer sponsor at the time, and the southend was called the Carlsberg court. Then the southend became the Canterbury Court when Canterbury became the beer sponsor. Rather than change the supporters name each time the club changed beer sponsors the group of supporters decided to call themselves the Southsiders.
